Venturer's Log: Islas del Rosario

For our full last day in Cartagena, we went massively over budget and booked a boat tour out to the Rosario Islands, a small archipelago about an hour off the coast of Cartagena.

It was an early start but it was absolutely worth it. There were about 35 people that piled onto our speedboat and we were off, jetting across the blue water. Nick and I were on the right hand side at the back of the boat and as we started cruising across the Caribbean the water started getting a bit choppier until the point where we were getting hit by waves at almost every jolt of the boat. It was hilarious, I thought that Nick in particular got a big brunt of it but I think that's because I was facing him, which meant I was facing away from the water, whereas he was getting it in the face nearly every time. The rest of the boat was laughing at us, and we were laughing along too - we were saturated by the time we made it to our first stop. Nick had a triumphant "I told you so" moment when he reminded me that he'd suggested we get into our swimsuits before leaving our Airbnb, and I had disagreed, but he was (frustratingly) correct.

As part of our day tour we visited the Fuerte de San Bernando de Bocachina, (a fortress on Bomba Island), went snorkelling on the outskirts of one of the Rosario Islands (I'm not sure which), sunbathed on another island (another which I am unsure about), had drinks at a table that meant we had to stand up to our chests in water, and finally had lunch on Playa Blanca which is technically on the mainland, on Baru peninsula.

The whole day was lush. The water was SO blue, the sand was SO white, the time spent on the water was lovely. On the way back, the other side of the boat got completely drenched which was even funnier when it wasn't happening to us, but all in all it was a really great day. We booked the tour through an agency but the tour itself was actually with Backpackers Cartagena. I had initially said to Nick that I wanted to book through them, and then we were chatted up by someone else from a different agency who seemed really nice so we booked it with them, to find out that it was through Backpackers anyway, which was ideal.

An idyllic day overall.
